Students Triumph in Debating, Earning First Place

The winning debating team and their coach

Hope Christian College is proud to celebrate a remarkable achievement by our senior students in their very first appearance at the Country Week Speech and Debating competition. Representing the school were Year 12 students Bianca Pearce, Emma Price, Sabrina Camporedondo, and Lincoln Godwin, with expert guidance from Head of English, Miss Holly Nilan.

Despite competing against schools that were well-established at Country Week, and former winners of the competition, our students showed extraordinary composure, teamwork, and critical thinking. Their dedication rewarded them with a first-place finish, a hard-fought triumph that highlights the talent and determination thriving within our school community.

The Fierce Competition

This was the first year the College entered the Speech and Debating division of the Country Week program, making the victory even more significant. The team prevailed in three diverse and challenging debates, tackling contemporary issues such as

  • The potential ban on e-rideable devices
  • Providing monetary incentives to high-performing teachers
  • A proposal for an Academic Olympics to celebrate intellectual achievement

Each topic called for not only quick thinking and strong communication but also the ability to consider multiple perspectives with depth and maturity.

Year 12 student Emma Price reflected on the experience: “I was initially very nervous, and doubted whether I could express my arguments with confidence. But critical thinking has been a huge part of my ATAR studies in English and Politics and Law, so that equipped me to think on my feet in these debates.”

Her acknowledgment highlights how the skills developed in the classroom such as analytical thinking, rhetorical structure, and confidence in delivery directly translate into success on a competitive stage.

Coach and mentor Miss Holly Nilan, Head of English, guided the team in honing their debating craft, encouraging them to turn individual strengths into a cohesive strategy. Her leadership ensured that each student found their voice, building both skill and confidence throughout the preparation process.

More Than Just a Trophy

This victory is about more than winning debates; it represents the academic culture at our school, where students are encouraged to embrace intellectual challenges, pursue excellence, and build the confidence to contribute to meaningful discussions in society.

The success of the debating team also shows the wide variety of opportunities available at our school, providing platforms for students to develop leadership, teamwork, and resilience skills that carry far beyond the classroom.
