My favourite subject at school would have to be Outdoor Ed because it combined learning with adventure. we get to explore nature, develop outdoor skills and get do do activities like hiking, swimming, camping and kayaking. The sense of accomplishment we get from overcoming challenges is incredibly rewarding. – Chloe H, Class of 2024
My favourite subject has been Outdoor Education with Mr Knepscheld as getting away from the classroom and going on the expeditions have been some of the best times I’ve had at school, as they have lead to new friendships, amazing experiences, and many happy memories – Tom T, Class of 2024
Experiences That Build Character
At Hope Christian College, our Outdoor Education program is a specialist course following the Western Australian Curriculum and the experiential learning framework of Plan, Do, Reflect. Students begin their study in Years 9 and 10 through our Options Program. Building on this, they can study Outdoor Education General in Years 11 and 12. Through adventure expeditions, students step out of their comfort zones to develop resilience, leadership, and a deeper connection with God’s creation. Activities such as abseiling, canyoning, caving, surfing, snorkelling, and mountain biking challenge students physically and mentally, while stewardship principles, like Leave No Trace, foster environmental responsibility.

Expeditions & Outdoor Skills Development
Students embark on multi-day expeditions where they develop outdoor skills through practical experience. Activities such as bike packing, hiking, canyoning, abseiling and surfing test their endurance and adaptability while encouraging teamwork and self-awareness. Navigating through rugged bushland, coastal cliffs, and waterways, they apply survival skills and problem-solving strategies, building confidence in real-world scenarios.
Environmental Awareness & Stewardship
Grounded in the Christian value of stewardship, our program emphasizes caring for God’s creation through Leave No Trace principles and sustainability initiatives. Students learn how human activity impacts the environment and what conservation efforts and what different organisations are participating in such as tree planting, erosion control, and marine habitat restoration.

Risk Management & Leadership
Each expedition challenges students to make critical decisions in dynamic environments, fostering leadership and teamwork. Students take on leadership roles, guiding peers through outdoor challenges and learning risk management strategies to ensure safety. Basic training in first aid, emergency response, and navigation equips them with essential life skills, preparing them for both outdoor adventures and future leadership opportunities.
Personal Growth & Wellbeing
Outdoor Education at Hope Christian College is about more than just physical challenge—it’s a journey of spiritual, mental, and emotional growth. Through adventure activities, students build resilience, perseverance, and self-confidence. Reflection sessions in wilderness settings encourage personal insight and faith development, helping students understand their strengths, overcome fear, and appreciate the beauty of God’s creation.
